How TikTok Spark Ads work
What Spark Ads are, how creator authorization works, and what to check before you put budget behind a creator's post.

Spark Ads are TikTok ads that promote an existing organic post, either from the brand's own account or from a creator's account with the creator's permission. The ad runs as the post itself, so engagement from the paid run (likes, comments, shares, follows) accrues to that original post (TikTok, June 2026). For a creator's post, the creator enables ad authorization in the TikTok app, selects 7, 30, 60 or 365 days and shares the resulting code with the brand (TikTok, October 2025).
How a Spark Ad differs from a standard In-Feed ad
A standard In-Feed ad is a video uploaded to TikTok Ads Manager and shown under the advertiser's identity. A Spark Ad points at a post that already exists on TikTok, which changes four things for a performance team.
- Identity. The ad carries the posting account's name and profile photo, which for a creator ad means the creator's handle.
- Social proof. Engagement from paid views lands on the original post and stays with it after the campaign ends (TikTok, June 2026).
- Captions. A Spark Ad takes its caption from the organic post, and that caption can't be edited once the post is authorized as an ad (TikTok, June 2026). Captions on standard In-Feed ads can't carry links, @ mentions or hashtags (TikTok, June 2026), while Spark captions can include account tags and hashtags (TikTok, June 2026).
- Specs. TikTok lists no restrictions on ratio, resolution, file type or bitrate for Spark Ads, with a 10-minute ceiling on videos that can be sparked (TikTok, June 2026). Standard In-Feed uploads are capped at 500 MB (TikTok, June 2026).

How authorization works
The creator controls the permission. Inside the TikTok app the creator enables ad authorization on one post, sets the duration and generates a code. The brand enters that code in TikTok Ads Manager. Ads Manager accepts up to 20 codes at once in a batch (TikTok, October 2025).
A few details catch teams out.
- A private video goes public once a campaign uses it (TikTok, October 2025). Creators who post privately for review need to know this before sharing the code.
- Duets and Stitches need authorization codes from both creators (TikTok, October 2025).
- A post has to be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before the creator can delete it from their account (TikTok, June 2026).
- Each Ads Manager account supports up to 10,000 Spark Ads (TikTok, June 2026). That only matters at real volume, but it is worth knowing before planning an always-on program.
Choosing the authorization window
The window should follow the test plan, and the plan should exist before anyone asks for a code. For a first test, 30 days covers the launch, a read and a second round on the winners. For a post that has already won and is moving to scale, the 365-day option avoids a renewal in the middle of a flight. A 7-day code suits a short promotion or a quick check of a single post.
The window is a technical permission inside TikTok. It doesn't replace a written usage agreement, which fixes where else the content may run, the term and the edits allowed. Our note on usage rights covers those terms.
Disclosure
A Spark Ad from a creator's account is a paid endorsement, and it needs a clear disclosure. TikTok's disclosure setting for commercial content tags the post as a paid partnership. Per TikTok, enabling it has no effect on how the post is recommended (TikTok, April 2026).
The label is a start. Per the FTC, a platform's built-in tool is not enough on its own to make a disclosure effective. Its guidance also prefers an early mention over one at the end of a video, and asks for a spoken disclosure when the claim itself is spoken (FTC, read 5 Oct 2026). We ask creators to say it in the video as well as switching the setting on.
When Spark Ads are the right format
Spark Ads suit tests where the creator's identity is part of the message: a recommendation from someone the viewer may already follow, or a demo that reads as a post rather than an ad. They also let a winning post keep its comments and engagement as spend grows, where a re-uploaded copy would start again from nothing.
They fit less well when the brand needs tight control of the caption, or when the creator's account has a history the brand would rather not carry. In those cases the same footage can run as a standard In-Feed ad from the brand's identity, provided the usage agreement allows it.
Because the format itself can move results, we test it directly when the budget justifies it: the same video as a Spark Ad from the creator's handle and as a standard ad from the brand, with matched targeting and budgets. See partnership ads for how we run that test.
Pre-launch checklist
- The post is the final cut, because the caption can't be edited after authorization.
- Disclosure is switched on in the app and also spoken or shown in the video.
- The code's window covers the test, the read and a first scale-up.
- The written usage agreement covers the same period and any use from the brand's account.
- The post is public, or the creator knows it will become public once it runs.
- Each code is logged: post, creator, expiry.
